Job Description

Resourcery Group are working on a retained basis with a global, £multi-billion turnover Business Services group based in Warrington. We have been retained to recruit a C-suite facing Divisional Controller operating across multiple business areas for a contract-led organisation.

The size and scope of this Business Services group is impressive and with daily exposure to the CEO, CFO and COO the Divisional Controller holds a critical position influencing Operational and Commercial decision making both at a strategic and tactical level. As a right-hand, sounding board, confidant and succession plan to the CFO you will spend approximately 50% of time providing support to the C-suite, in particular the COO from an operational perspective. Finance has been realigned to mirror and support the operational structure of the business units to allow for and ensure synergies and cost savings are realised quickly. This restructure forms part of a wider change agenda aimed at driving efficiencies and improvements across the business through the integration of Finance, Operations and Sales.

Your role, as Divisional Controller, is to work with a multi-site team of senior Regional Financial Controllers, Site Contract Managers and at times the client in what is a contract-led business. Cross-functional stakeholders include IT, Risk, Operations, Business Development and Finance. You will also gain exposure to a Group function based overseas. Managing a circa £270m division of a £350m t/o business you will be central to the fortunes of the business over the next 3-5 years and play a critical role in the formulation and delivery of strategic plans. The Divisional Controller will split their time ultimately 30% Commercial Support, 40% Operational Support and 30% People Management/ Team Leadership. The latter area is critical as you will have to drive improvements, efficiency and consistency of approach across a geographically diverse team of Regional Controllers and client contracts of varying complexity, scale and profitability.

Gravitas, Leadership, Credibility, Professional Integrity, Influence, Communication, Perception Management, Self-Awareness are all essential attributes of a suitable Divisional Controller. Emotional Intelligence is thus critical in such a role as you will support and offer advice and guidance to both those above and below you in the business.

Given the initial operational bias of the role and future commercial influence, it is envisaged the Divisional Controller will possess a strong Financial Planning & Analysis and Financial Control background, be performance focused, champion continuous improvement and operational efficiency, drive revenue and EBITDA growth, be pivotal to decision making, implement and maintain financial controls where relevant to minimise operational risks and manage the Balance Sheet effectively. As you can see, this is a fantastic and expansive Divisional Controller role that could equally be called a Divisional FD. With the scope for the role to develop over time in to a CFO position this is a rare and highly sought after career opportunity.

Given the above, suitable applicants for the role of Divisional Controller should be:

  • A seasoned Divisional Controller with experience in a £xxxm t/o division of a larger group
  • A qualified accountant - CIMA, ACCA or ACA
  • Able to demonstrate experience influencing at a C-suite level, contributing to strategy, driving delivery and owning change
  • Possess a strong financial control bias
  • A proven leader and staff manager capable of up-skilling, mentoring and training teams
  • Able to drive better operational behaviour, consistency and cost reduction
  • Experienced in a similar contract-led business
  • Capable of developing into a CFO in the next 3-5 years.
  • Experienced at managing wide-scale change
  • Experience or M&A, post-acquisition change, ERP change and general restructuring would be beneficial but not essential.
