DILEMMA - YOU'VE ACCEPTED A NEW ROLE & CHANGED YOUR MIND

As a recruiter, there is nothing worse than chalking up a placement on the board for it to fall through at the last hour.

Typical reasons we hear are:
·      More money elsewhere
·      Better promotion prospects
·      An improved hybrid/WFH split
·      Greater flexibility
·      Location closer to home
·      The company values and ethics more reflective of their own

A good recruiter will listen to you if you are having doubts after having accepted the original offer. It maybe that you need to have a further conversation with the company to see if they can flex to match the conditions that your alternative option offers. Maybe there wasn’t enough clarification during the interview process and assuming a certain stance may not be an accurate reflection of the client’s intentions. However, we understand that there are some hard lines that can’t be turned around too.

How you handle the withdrawal from offer previously accepted is important. A good recruiter will listen to you, understand your point of view and should be objective (despite losing a placement fee!). They will have dialogue with the client so that the door could be left open for you with future opportunities. Good etiquette is to give as much notice as possible so that the employer/recruiter can put a Plan B into action. You maybe a client in the future so if your recruiter is professional, they will not want to burn bridges with you. Likewise, when it comes to your next career move beyond this, you will want to reach out to them again without being concerned as to whether they will engage with you when they may have access to some of the best vacancies out there.
